Chiryu Yama Float Bunraku and Karakuri Puppets
2-3 May, Chiryu (Aichi prefecture)
In modern days, the ritual of the Chiryu Shrine is held on 2 and 3 May every year, and in the biannually grand festival, five festival floats come from each town to the shrine. Ningyou-Joruri (Japanese Bunraku puppet show) is played on three floats of Yamamachi town, Nakamachi town and Shinchimachi town, and karakuri puppet show is played on the float of Nishimachi town.
Each float has two floors: the first floor is “Maedonya”, the Karahahu-style place for Shamisen musicians and Tayu singers, and Ningyou-Joruri is played by three people on the stage which was constructed in the front of Maedonya. Karakuri puppet show is played on the second floor of the float.
Chiryu Yama Float Bunraku is a remarkable float festival in terms of performance, which shows both karakuri puppet show on the upper floor and Ningyo-Joruri on the lower floor at once.
