Furukawa Matsuri Festival with Okoshi-daiko drumming and the Yatai ritual

19-20 April, Hida (Gifu prefecture)

Okoshi Daiko Drumming and Yatai Float Ritual are the main events of Furukawa Festival, which is dedicated to Ketawakami, the local god of Furukawa town. On 19 April every year, the various big Yatai float processions with Shishimai (lion dance) and Keitougaku (children’s dance) are held following a Mikoshi (portable Shinto shrine). The stirring Okoshi Daiko Drumming starts at midnight on 20 April.

Originally, Okoshi Daiko Drumming was the sign of the start of the main ritual of this festival. While this drumming, the masses of half-naked young men carry the large tower where the large taiko drum is placed, and the two men sit astride and beat the drum with great vigor.

When the parade of the taiko drum through the town, more drummers with small drums come out from each neighborhood and join forces with the large taiko drum tower. The fierce battle between the large drummers and the small drummers is a noteworthy event that evokes the masculine excitement of the festival.
