Hachinohe Sansha Taisai Festival and its Dashi Float Ritual
1-3 August, Hachinohe (Aomori prefecture)
Hachinohe Sansha Taisai Festival is the annual summer festival which is held by Ogami, Shinra, and Shinmei shrines. In this festival, there is a parade of 27 gorgeous Furyu-type festival floats following Mikoshi parade every day.
The procession is divided into three parts, and each of them is run by each shrine. The construct of it is traditionally decided: the center of the parade is Ohnusa-Shinshoku (“divine master”), Saishu (a ritual commander and a side ritual commander), and Mikoshi portable shrines. Ujiko (parishioners), Samurai soldiers, and flags and children are surrounding back and forth of the center. Next, traditional dancing such as Kagura dancers, Shishi-mai (Lion dance), Tora-mai (Tiger dance), and large festival floats follow them. Hana-yatai, the stage of Geisha's performance follows at last.
The floats were originally offered by the rich man living in this town to the shrines in 1747, and they became Furyu-type festival floats when the town itself owned the floats. The decorations of floats have gradually changed to a modern style until now. The historical accuracy of the development of floats and the remaining traditional customs of the festival’s management organization make the festival a valuable example that clearly shows the tradition of Japan’s float festivals and the development of festival floats.
