Hakata Gion Yamagasa Ritual

1-15 July, Hukuoka (Hukuoka prefecture)

Hakata Gion Yamagasa Ritual is a part of the annual summer festival of Kusida Shrine. It has been passed down based on the tradition of the city of Hakata.

It begins with the “Tsuji Kitou” ritual on 1 July, and Decorating Yamagasa, “Okamiire” ritual, “Oshioitori” ritual, “Nagaregaki” ritual and “Asayama-Tanagaregaki” ritual follow it. On 12 July, Yamagasa floats race in “Oiyama Narashi” ritual.

Rituals on 13 and 14 July are Nagare-gaki, Tanagare-gaki and Yamagasa-gaki, which are all parades of floats. On 15 July, Yamagasa floats race again in “Oiyamagasa” ritual.

The role of carrying the Yamagasa is divided according to age hierarchy, such as “Tairo” senior, “Churo” middle, and young based on discussions of each town having its float. The people involving the float parade wear the same traditional Happi coat and headband, and especially people carrying the float wear a special color of sash. The way of racing float is full of bravery and masculinity, and this festival is one of the typical Yamagasa rituals in the area of northern Kyushu.
