Hitachi Fūryūmono

3-5 May, Hitachinala (Ibaraki prefecture)

Hitachi Fūryūmono is the ritual parade of karakuri puppets playing on four Dashi festival floats from four neighboring towns: Higashi-machi, Nishi-machi, Hon-machi and Kita-machi. In recent years, it has been held during Hitachi Matsuri Festival.

The floats of this festival are enormous, measuring around 15m in height, 3-8m in width, and around 5t in weight, with five-layered Karahahu-style roofs on their top. In the festival, the roofs are opened in the middle and turned into the stages for traditional puppet performances, such as “Genpei-seisui-ki” and “Kanadehon-Chushingura”. Five different scenes are played on each roof, and during the play, each move of puppets is manipulated by lopes carefully maintaining harmony among the whole float.

These floats are not only enormous but also intricate and magnificent in terms of their equipment, which incorporates karakuri puppets and their complex construction. These extraordinal features of the floats make its karakuri puppet play more special and interesting.
