Hita Gion Hikiyama Float Ritual
Saturday and Sunday after 20 July, Hita (Ohita prefecture)
This ritual is held during the Gion festival of Yasaka Shrine, Wakamiya Shrine and Mameda-yasaka Shrine.
Its floats are called “Yamahachi” which are created every year and decorated with puppets acting famous scenes of Kabuki drama. 9 of these large floats join the parade and do the series of rituals, such as “Honbiki” parade in the afternoon, “Chonai-oshi” parade, and “Banyama” night parade.
The Yamabachi float is a type of float with a unique multi-layered structure with puppets, and the feature makes the float distinctive and different from floats of other Gion festival in neighboring cities like Hakata.
