Inuyama Matsuri Festival and the Yama ritual

The first weekend of April, Inuyama (Aichi prefecture)

This remarkable parade is held as the traditional spring ritual of Haritsuna Shrine. Each of 13 neighboring towns in Inuyama brings their special big “Yama” floats carrying karakuri puppets, and the other 3 towns including Ukai-cho do “Nerimono", which is the parade of disguise.

The Yama floats of Inuyama Festival are “three-tiered and four-wheeled” structures, which are also known as Inuyama type of floats. There is also a tradition of young musicians and children putting on a grand performance of “Hatsuagari” (first ride) on the float for the first time.

The main ritual of this festival is the parade of Inuyama-style floats carrying karakuri puppets. This is the typical case of a festival with a parade of floats with karakuri puppets in Chubu region.
