Jōhana Sinmeigu Matsuri Festival and its Hikiyama Float Ritual
4-5 May, Nanto (Toyama prefecture)
This ritual is a part of the annual spring festival of Johana Sinmeigu Shrine. In the ritual, Mikoshi portable shrine, Shishimai lion dance, Hoko and Hikiyama floats, and Iori Yatai floats parade in the town.
Yoi-Matsuri on 4th May is the parade of three Mikoshi portable shrines from Johana Shinmeigu to Otabisho (temporary midway resting point for divinity). Each of the neighboring towns assembles its own Hikiyama and Iori floats and displays the statue of the divine at Yamayado, which is a house chosen as a resting place for divine gods.
5 of May is the day of the main parade of floats. Following Mikoshi, Hoko, Hikiyama and Iori floats parade through the town. They were towed by local inhabitants of this rural area.
Hikiyama floats of this festival are two-tiered and four-wheeled type of floats, gorgeously lacquered and decorated with carving and metal fitting. Iori Yatai floats are the type of floats without a floor, and the decorations on its top are intricately crafted. These floats parade with Hayashi music, and a group of young men perform Iori songs at several points on the route.
