Kamezaki Shiohi Matsuri Festival and its Yama Float Ritual
3-4 May, Handa (Aichi prefecture)
This ritual is a part of Shiohi Matsuri Festival, the annual festival of Shinzen Shrine, which is the general shrine of the city of Handa in the northeast of Chita peninsula. Five local groups provide their own Yama floats with karakuri puppets and parades in the city.
These Yama floats are the two-tiered type of festival float, which is called “Chita-style float”. Every year, One of five local groups take the responsible role called “Daisangen”, which takes the overall management of the floats. Each local group also has an honorable role called “Kurumamoto”, who provides the group’s expenses, and this role also has responsibility for the management of the floats.
Karakuri puppets called “Kamiyama ningyo” are displayed on the stage surrounded by four pillars on the float, and another karakuri puppet called “Mae ningyo” is also displayed on the front stage. The floats of this festival are known as the most extravagant in the Chita-style floats.
