Kanuma Imamiya Shrine Festival and its Yatai Float Ritual
The second Saturday and Sunday of October, Kanuma (Tochigi prefecture)
This float ritual is held with the annual festival of Imamiya Shrine in October. Each town around the shrine brings its Yatai float with gorgeous carvings for the parade.
There are a total of 27 towns having their floats, and around 20 floats out of them are dedicated every year.
These towns are divided into 4 groups, and each group takes its turn to be in charge of the festival. From the group on duty, one town is chosen as the manager of the festival.
On the first day of the festival, Yatai floats parade around the town and enter the shrine in the predefined order. After playing traditional music in the shrine, lanterns on the floats are turned on and go back the way to each hometown.
