Ohgaki Matsuri Festival and Yama Floats Ritual
The Latest Saturday and Sunday before 15 May, Ohgaki (Gihu prefecture)
The floats ritual is held during annual festival of Ohgaki Yahata shrine, which is general shrine of Ohgaki region. The three floats called "Sanjyo-yama", which were given by the feudal lord in the Edo period (1603-1868), and the floats called "Hontei", which are from 10 towns under the old castle, are pulled out in a lively procession, and a performance of "Hougei" in front of Hachiman Shrine, the parade of floats through the city, and "Yomiya (the ritual at night) are held.
The “Hougei” dance on each Yama float is performed by simple dolls, exquisite karakuri puppets and children.
In the “Yomiya” ritual, Yama floats decorated with many lanterns get together in front of the shrine, and after showing “Hougei” and “Yama-Mawashi”, these floats do “Hikiwakare” ritual of going back to their towns.
