Owari Tsushima Tennoh Matsuri Festival and Its Danjiri Bune Ritual
Fourth Weekend of July, Tsushima and Anzai (Aichi prefecture)
This ritual is a part of the annual Tsushima Shrine Festival, and consists of two sections: “Yoi-Matsuri (Night Festival)” and “Asa-Matsuri (Morning Festival)”. In Yoi-Matsuri, five Danjiri floats decorated with 365 lanterns visit Otabisho (the resting point for the portable shrine).
In Asa-Matsuri, “Ichie Guruma” boat leads the parade of the five floats, and they visit Otabisho again. Many naked young men dive into the lake from the Ichie Guruma and worship at Otabisho faster than the floats.
Following the young men, children land and worship Otabisho. These children accompany the floats on the way back to Tsushima Shrine and play Taiko drums at the shrine.
