Sawara Dashi Ritual is the side ritual of both Yasaka Shrine at Honjuku and Suwa Shrine at Shinjuku. The gorgeous floats decorated with giant puppets parade around the city with the Sawara Bayashi, the traditional music of this town.
The Honjuku’s Sawara Dashi ritual is held during the Gion Matsuri Festival of Yasaka Shrine in the middle of July, and 10 towns provide their Dashi floats for the parade.
The Shinjuku’s Sawara Dashi ritual is held during the annual festival of Suwa Shrine in the middle of October, and 14 towns provide their Dashi floats for the parade. Both summer and autumn parades are held every day of the festival.
This is the festival of Zaigou-machi, the town flourished in the shipping industry using Tone River during the Edo Period, so it retains not only the regional traditional culture but also the strict management group to hand down the culture. It also has a lot of influence on the festivals and traditional music of neighboring areas, therefore, it is recognized as the representation of the Dashi float festival of this region.
