Takayama Matsuri Festival and the Yatai ritual
14-15 April, and 9-10 October, Takayama (Gihu prefecture)
Takayama Festival is composed of Sannou Festival at Hie Shrine in April in spring and Hachiman Festival at Hachiman Shrine in October in autumn.
In both festivals, over 10 gorgeous festival floats parade with keitougaku (chicken dance) and Shishi-mai (lion dance). At night, these floats were lightened up with lanterns.
The person called “Nengyouji” conducts the parade, and karakuri puppets play dramas with traditional Hayashi music on these floats. This is important as one of the representative rituals of using festival floats in this country.
